In about 2009, I stopped by a local thrift store in Phoenix, Arizona to find a couch--instead, I found this handsome (and awesome) gear-shaped vintage coffee table that stayed with me until I moved and shipped everything I owned years later, which I still regret. Not only was this a cool-looking gear table made of heavy wood, it spun! What I later found out is that it was an original vintage Ethan Allen piece worth $800-$1200. The thing about thrift stores is that the employee that does the pricing often doesn't know when a piece of furniture is rare or worth much more.
